About the Song
"Hole in My Soul" is a swampy, soul-drenched slice of dark Americana from Nashville songwriter Lauren Lucas, co-written with Kenny Greenberg.
Built on a stomp-clap groove, gritty overdriven guitars, and dobro, the track pulls the drum kit in on verse two and builds to a huge, gospel-sized wall of background vocals and shouts.
Lucas's rich, gritty alto carries a lyric about a craving that won't let go. Her own particular addiction: the hustle, the overachieving, the comparison that never actually finishes counting.
Fans of Adia Victoria, The Deslondes, Amethyst Kiah, and Shakey Graves will find a natural home here.
“Hole in My Soul” Lyrics:
I don’t reach for the bottle, I won’t touch dope
A sneakier feeling’s taking hold
I’ve been drinking the rain, but I’m dying of thirst
Every blessing these days feels like a curse
Running after shadows, restless flame
Strange desires I can’t name
Hang on, get ready
You’re gonna pay the price ‘cause ain’t nothing for free
Hang on, it gets heavy
I’m chasing this craving relentlessly
I had a heart full of gold, but I let it all go
There’s a hole in my soul and it’s killin’ me
Hey, hey
There’s a restless wind on midnight breeze
Makes the night drag on and the willows weep
I’ve tried every potion in a bottomless glass
It comes on quick but it wears off fast
The harder I love, the faster it fades
Like a scar cut deep by a razor blade
Hang on, get ready
You’re gonna pay the price ‘cause ain’t nothing for free
Hang on, it gets heavy
I’m chasing this craving relentlessly
I had a heart full of gold, but I let it all go
There’s a hole in my soul and it’s killin’ me
Hey, hey
I’ve been haunted by (haunted by)
the hunger inside (the hunger inside)
It’s a river that’s running deep and wide
Hang on, get ready
You’re gonna pay the price ‘cause ain’t nothing for free
Hang on, it gets heavy
I’m chasing this craving relentlessly
I had a heart full of gold, but I let it all go
There’s a hole in my soul and it’s killin’ me
Hey, hey
